Interaction between two or more people that is time delayed, that is, separated by minutes, hours, even days. Correspondence courses and e-mail are asynchronous forms of distance learning. The opposite is synchronous communication, such as talking on the phone or videoconferencing. Good distance learning programs typically use both synchronous and asynchronous communication.
